2011 Kulture Shock Car Show Review
June 18th, 2011 marked the 6th annual Kulture Shock Car Show at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Lakeport. Another record year for car entries and also for our Pin-Up contestants, as nineteen lovely ladies graced the outdoor stage. Beautiful 85 degree weather brought out the crowds for the first taste of summer, as they checked out the great variety of hot rods, gassers and classics on display.
This year, Kulture Shock boasted entries from northern Oregon and as far south as Los Gatos and everyone in between, with more and more groups of cars and clubs attending. The word is out “this is a great small town show you don’t want to miss!”
Three live bands provided the backdrop for the day as the show opened with the surf-a-billy sounds of “Los High Tops” from Santa Cruz, followed by the unique mix of rock-a-billy and rock n’ roll as strutted by “Tony T. and The Pendletons” of Modesto. The afternoon sets were revved up with “Quarter Mile Combo” of San Francisco with their Americana rock-a-billy sounds featuring the awesome “Miss Nettie”.
The Kiwanis Club of Lakeport served the show’s signature $1 beer and $3 Bloody Mary’s. Great affordable Mexican and BBQ tri-tip food was well received as was “Vendor Avenue” with 50’s and 60’s themed items for sale, making for a shopper’s paradise. A 50’s and 60’s salon for hair and makeup kept busy all day with pin-up do’s, floral hair accessories and lots of red lipstick. Many of the pin-up contestants and lots of show goers could be seen throughout the day visiting the salon.
Nineteen pin-up contestants paraded through the audience and up to the outdoor stage mid-afternoon before a panel of four judges. Desiree Trevino of Livermore received the first place cash award of $150, Brianna Vargas of Kelseyville received $100 for second place and Tory Burkett of Orland placed third receiving $50.
Miss Kulture Shock 2010, Jessica Santos of Lakeport and show owner Rick Rose conducted the huge raffle with great items including the coveted “Kulture Shock Tool Boxes”, a hand-carved Tiki, women’s 50’s style purses among some of the great items along with the grand prize rolling tool box set; donated in part by Lake Parts Napa store in Lakeport.
This year’s car show winners were presented with hand made trophies by The Choir Boys of Capay, The Roadents of Grass Valley and Acme Kustoms of Sebastopol. Best Engine – “The Delbert Award – Danny Rose Memorial” for most radical engine was awarded to Fred Stoke of Santa Rosa for his blown-hemi 34’ Ford Pickup. Best Custom went to Scott & Marla Dawson of Orland for their 1953 Chevy hardtop, Rust of Show recipient was Jesse Brewen of Redding in his 1934 Ford coupe and the Best Hot Rod award was presented to Todd Van Boekel also of Redding in his 1930 Ford Sedan.
Show promoters, Rick & Martha Rose wish to thank the local community for their support of the show in addition to this year’s vendors; Poison Apple Parasols of Santa Rosa, Lopes Kreations of Santa Rosa, Penny Lane Emporium of Lakeport, The Salon At High Street Village in Lakeport, Hats & More of Oroville, Bazzani’s Bitchin’ Stitchin’ of Ukiah, Kool Collectibles of Santa Rosa and Fun House Antiques of Cobb. Special thanks also goes out to the Skylark Shores Resort and The Regency Inn for their discounted rates in hosting many of the car entrants. The Kiwanis Club of Lakeport were the recipients of a successful fundraising day with all proceeds from the beer booth going to their club as Kulture Shock’s way of giving back to the community.
Next year’s date is June 16, 2012, and as always falls on “Father’s Day” weekend, so mark your calendars and save the date. The show will continue to be held at the Lake Co. Fair-grounds. We look forward to seeing you back next year!
